If you’re interested in YouVersion or in what you might need to consider when putting together a mobile app for ministy, watch this seven-minute interview, Jesus IS Bigger Than Angry Birds, by  TechCrunch with YouVersion’s founder, Bobby Gruenewald.

Takeways:

- YouVersion has positioned itself as a “Bible engagement” tool and “interactive” app

- YouVersion measures ‘everything’ including amount of time the app is open

- YouVersion has positioned itself as a cause (they are trying to get people to read the Bible)

- YouVersion thinks that if something is on a mobile device, it’s more a part of your life

- YouVersion thinks there are many more mobile apps in this ‘religious’ mobile space.

Interesting.  What take-aways do you have about how YouVersion is helping people connect with God?

The Motion Computing F5v is an impressive computer that just might be the solution for your ministry.  If you work:

  • outdoors
  • in remote locations
  • in a field clinic
  • in a warehouse with inventory
  • at a conference

Perhaps our FamilyLife, GAiN and JESUS Film ministries, as well as others, could use a rugged tablet like this.

The computer has a touch screen or you can use a dgitized pen on the screen. The Motion Computing F5v can handle different weather conditions and is readable in bright sunlight.  It has a Gorilla® Glass screen and a rugged body with a handle.

I was impressed that you can swap your first battery with a charged second battery without shutting down.

Optionally, it can come with:

  • a magnetic stripe reader
  • an RFID reader
  • cameras
  • a bar code scanner

It’s Windows-based which would be important for accessing Campus Crusade for Christ systems, such as PeopleSoft.

Samsung unveiled their new Galaxy Beam phone at a conference in Barcelona this week.  It’s just a bit bigger than a mobile phone and pricey at this point. (I only saw it for sale on one website for $800.)

So, let’s dream a bit while we wait for the price to come down.

What can this phone do?

  • Projects videos, PowerPoints, and more, up to 50 ” wide (1.2 m) in high definition
  • Runs in a loop
  • Has a battery life of three hours and should last for two years
  • Needs a speaker accessory to project the sound for a large group

How could it be used for ministry now or in the future?

  • Show the Jesus film and/or short films (see first note)
  • Do a PowerPoint presentation for a team meeting on a retreat
  • Show a short video for MPD at a mission board meeting
  • And obviously, go just about anywhere (see first note)

What ideas do you have?

We’ll be having computer labs (called “1-2-1 at Lake Hart”) during the lunch hour on the first Tuesday of each month at headquarters.  A dozen staff have volunteered to be available to answer questions on topics ranging from Macs, social networks, mobile devices, eMail, blogging, TntMPD, MailChimp, and more.  Twenty-eight staff came to our “trial run” lab in February.  I asked them what they thought of the lab:

“This was very helpful!!!  I like the informal setting where we can ask questions.  It is very difficult to grasp the tools we have available.  What is very basic for one of your experts, is very complicated for some people.  We need more bridge builders like you!!!  Sign me up to come again.”  ~ Tim C.

“I am interested in coming again. I actually really liked the free open ended way the lab was handled… I really wasn’t sure what I was going to ask [Mike] but as I sat there and fiddled with my MAC I really had a lot of questions. Thank you. I’ll be there next month.” ~ Lori D.
