Anyone who cooks knows that it’s very helpful when recipes use universal language for measurements. While realizing that if you get a recipe from another country, translation will need to be made, a cook appreciates it when “t” means “teaspoon” and “T” means “tablespoon.” If one recipe reversed those two terms, or used something completely different, the result is highly affected. Clarity makes the difference between delicious and disastrous.

The same thing could be said for our communication within the ministry. In order for there to be clarity, and professionalism, we need to make sure our terms are consistent. This leaves a good taste in the mouths of the watching world.

In the journalistic universe, newspapers depend on the Associated Press (AP) Stylebook. It is constantly being updated with terms and names that are in use around the world. As technology changes, terms are added. When a volcano erupts in Iceland, all the writers know where to look for the accepted spelling of Eyjafjal...

She did not knock on my door requesting to borrow a cup of sugar.  She did not call me to set up a play date for our children.  She did not even friend request me on Facebook.  Instead, she approached me with a question that would make a couple of kindred spirits smile.  She asked me to be her “Bloggy Friend,” which was a request I could not refuse.  We are two moms, separated by distance, but bound by so many common interests.  We both love Jesus, we both have a heart for ministry, and we both like to blog with a purpose.  And so began a friendship that ten years ago would have seemed highly unconventional, but seems completely normal in our technology-saturated culture of today.

As Bloggy Friends we share our heartbreaks and our hopes, our dreams and our failures, all from the context of our blogs.  We read each other’s posts, making comments from time to time, interacting, engaging, empathizing, and dialoguing.  Bloggy Friends take friendships to levels of transparency that many tradition...

You cannot be effective in ministry today unless you are PROFICIENT in technology/social media.

Not an expert, nor a casual observer, but intentional, strategic, and humble to learn, try, and discard technological tools.

So much so that I’m going to be guest posting there regularly on the topics of technology and productivity.  “One Awesome Place to Capture Your Tasks,” my first guest post, is live on the Staffhacker, but the even easier thing to do is subscribe to the Staffhacker blog.

NOTE from Sus: When I read Brian’s post, I thought of  YOU! No matter what your level of technological skill (or your opinion of technology), I can almost guarantee that you will need to be learning and growing in your use of technology.  A very effective way to do that is to SUBSCRIBE to receive weekly emails with e4e posts.   Every week, you’ll receive two ideas about ministry and technology in your inbox.  Why not sig...
