I’ve found pinning a very helpful way to find quickly what I use often.

  • Windows 7 allows me to pin programs to the taskbar so I can readily open Outlook, Excel, Mozilla Firefox, TntMPD, and other programs I use daily.  (Read how…)
  • I especially like pinning files in the “recent document list” in Word 2007, Excel 2007, or Powerpoint 2007.  (Read how…)
  • You can also pin specific web pages to the taskbar with Internet Explorer 9. (Read how…)
  • If I prefer not to have a lot of icons in my taskbar, I can pin programs in the Start Menu.  (Read how…)

I use this stationery when I want to add a personal note in a prayer letter or in a greeting card. (See related posts below).

Follow this step-by-step guide to make one of your own.

The Most Difficult Step Is First

That is, getting your adult children willingly all in one place for some photos where everyone is smiling and not squinting or blinking. Okay, I’m joking. I remember, too, the younger-children time period could be more challenging at times.

Of course, you could choose to do a photo of your team on campus or on a recent project.

Set up the Stationery

My document has the following. You may choose to do this slightly differently.
• Narrow margins
• Landscape page orientation
• Two columns ( I print two half sheets per page)

The photo is centered and formatted in line with the text.

Type in the text above and below the photo and… you’re not done yet! Your project will look something like this next photo because the colors and fonts still need to be set to the official Campus Crusade ...

The lowly computer mouse has changed over the years. You may not have all the features I’ll mention or you may have more.

Cleaning

If you have an older mouse with a tracking ball to roll around your mouse pad, you know how frustrating it can be when the cursor doesn’t move freely across your screen because lint and dust have built up inside your mouse. It’s easy to fix. Wait until your computer is off before taking these steps:

  1. Unscrew the plastic circle that holds the ball inside the mouse.
  2. After the ball drops out, notice the delicate roller bars inside.  Chances are lint is glued on to these bars, like little felt pads.
  3. Moisten a Q-Tip swab with rubbing alcohol and gently dab at the dirty bars to moisten and loosen the lint.
  4. The lint will come off like a little piece of dark felt.
  5. Screw the ball back in.

Types of Computer Mice

If you want a more convenient mouse (and are tired of cleaning your old one), you might want to upgrade to an optical mouse or a wireless mouse.

Most mice are optical now.Â...

Do you use keyboard shortcuts?  Knowing some shortcuts will help you be more efficient.  For instance, when I need to copy a URL to put a link in a document, I put my cursor on the website address then I hold down  CTRL + A which selects the address, then CTRL + C copies it.  I go back to Word (or wherever I am working on at the moment) and use CTRL + V to paste the address.  (See this post for more details about putting hyperlinks in documents.)

It really is worth learning some of these.  Watch the video to see how to use the keys mentioned in the two lists below.  (Use the Command Key instead of the Control Key if you have a Mac):

  • CTRL+A: Select all in window
  • CTRL+C: Copy
  • CTRL+X: Cut
  • CTRL+V: Paste
  • CTRL+Z: Undo
  • CTRL+B: Bold
  • CTRL+U: Underline
  • CTRL+I: Italic

I also use the first Microsoft shortcut listed below and I want to start using the second one.  I’m always opening Windows Explorer!

  • Windows Logo+M: Minimize all (try D instead of M, you might like it better.)
  • Windows Logo+E: ...
