Bing Travel makes searches easier in order to help you for that upcoming trip, including a currency converter, finding the best prices for airlines and hotels, maps, and more.  After you go to bing.com, click on Travel in the links across the top.  You can choose flights or hotels to quickly find what you’re looking for.  The indicators even let you know if the prices are going up or down. (Or, here’s their link for Destinations which also includes flights and hotels for specific cities.)

Check out these recommended travel sites from Bing’s editors:

I wrote earlier about saving printing costs by how you choose your printers and ink cartridges. Now, let’s look specifically at fonts.

Documents and eMails

The University of Wisconsin at Green Bay chose Century Gothic instead of Arial as their default typeface in basic documents, spreadsheets, and eMail, claiming that Century Gothic used the least ink, even 30% less than Arial.  (But why eMail?  Because you’ll print some of your electronic correspondence, so eMail was also included in the programs with recommended defaults.)

Printing

I also learned from this study that ink is 60% of the cost of a printed page.   So, how can you save the cost of ink and paper simply by choosing your fonts wisely? Take a look at the following list of commonly recommended fonts (which also includes Campus Crusade for Christ’s official fonts, Atma and Trade Gothic) to see how the different typefaces compare.  All are font size 12.

If your prayer letter or spreadsheet (or whatever document) will fit on one page using Cen...

Ink cartridges sure are pricey!  I read that ink costs $10,000 per gallon!  Wow! When I look at it that way, it means I may want to start re-thinking what I’m doing.

And let’s face it, eMinistry does cost money when you look at the cost of hardware, software, internet service, printers, and ink.

Cartridges

I prefer brand name cartridges, but you can save a lot with off-brands and refilling your cartridges.   You’ll just need to determine if the quality of the printing is affected  by using a generic.  If so, is this change in quality important for the kind of printing you do?

By the way, don’t believe that “low ink” warning.  I use an economical setting for most of my unimportant print jobs, so I’m printing for maybe three times longer than my indicator says I should.  I wait until the ink actually is used up.  Some suggest shaking a cartridge when the printouts are fading (I’d do this with a plastic bag around the cartridge). Re-insert the cartridge and see if it makes your cartridge last a littl...

Creche at Lake Hart

Happy Advent!  Do you need some gift ideas for your donors or anyone on your list? Would you like to make photobooks but don’t know how?  Are you simply unsure how to keep the next several weeks meaningful (and organized)?

What Child is This?

Looking for a creative gift idea?  How about a way to showcase your pictures? Photobooks and calendars (and tons of other items) make great gifts for family or supporters; they can be simple or elaborate.

Shutterfly is a good choice–it has the highest ratings for a service that does a wide variety of products.  (I’ve used MyPublisher to do photobooks and was very happy with the end results, but I’m looking for something easier to use, so I intend to try Shutterfly for my project this year).  If you haven’t tried to do these projects before, then “ease of use” should be your highest criteria in choosing a service.  Most of these companies ship in less than a week after you submit your project, so you still have time.
