I’m sure you’re aware of the growing collaborative nature of the internet (see this Wikipedia explanation of Web 2.0).  Many ministry sites are leaving behind passive web sites and moving ahead to involve others in ministry using the internet.  If you want to change the world using volunteers and/or disciples who are freely contributing to a project, whether or not you plan to use technology to do it, then I recommend you watch this excellent thirteen-minute Ted talk by Clay Shirky, an expert on the social and economic effects of technology.

Some highlights from the talk are:

  • People are generous with their time, wanting to share and create,
  • The internet allows them to freely contribute content, not just consume,
  • People are motivated to add communal and/or civic value to a project,
  • The number of people who are able to contribute to projects will grow as more people use technology, and
  • We can change the world by supporting and rewarding these people as they work together with us.

I’m not writing much today because I hope this video inspires you to consider how you might do something similar in your ministry.  So, I’m hoping YOU will write and let me know:

  • if you are doing something similar or
  • if this video  gets you thinking of something you might like to try with Facebook, Twitter, mobile phones, or some other technology.

This additional video testimony for YouVersion is similar, but slightly different, too.

I’m starting to post Campus internet sites that are good examples in three categories. Hopefully, these links will be a resource for others who would like ideas for their web page, Facebook fan page, or ministry blog; this will not be an exhaustive list.  You can click on the thumbnails to visit the sites.

Please comment here if you have sites to suggest.  Do you know of a Campus Ministry that is using YouTube, Twitter, or other media well?

This must-see video is geared toward economics, but is still eye-opening.  It’s important for all of us to understand the incredible impact of social media on our lives and on our culture.

What is your “take away” from this video?  For me,  I’m remembering my first website was a static place where others could go for information.   Now, my posts go to my potential readers instead of them going to the posts and … I hear from them even within seconds sometimes!

Have you looked seriously at your ministry through the lens of  social networking?   Are you and your disciples integrating your face-to-face connections with your virtual connections?  Who are you trying to reach and what is the best way to reach them?

I also recommend this article which can help you understand what different generations are doing online.  A chart breaks down over twenty online activities for people aged 12 to 70+.

I know you will be encouraged and challenged to grow in your own role as one of God’s Kingdom Builders through the posts shared this month on the Global Staff Women’s Shared Reader.   All these posts happen to be by Campus Crusade for Christ staff men who are featured in a new category in the eQuipping for eMinistry (e4e) blogroll, “Leading Movements.”

If you enjoy the posts in this shared reader, why not visit some of these blogs to discover more great material from Campus Crusade staff?  You can even make some new friends along the way!   This post explains the categories for the blogroll in the left sidebar.  If your blog fits in one of the different categories we’re looking for, tell me about your blog by posting a comment.

If you’re a mom-at-home, remember: “No man or woman ever had a nobler challenge or a higher privilege than to raise a child to love and serve God. “ (Vance Havner)  Keep building into the lives of those little ones!
